June 26 Review: Tampa, FL
DCI Atantic
Thanks to Jeremy Vest for emailing this review to reviews@scorpsboard.com!

I went to the Orlando and Tampa DCI show, so I will give a two show combined review... [scores from the Tampa show]

Tampa Bay Thunder 53.80

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

These guys have come a long way in a short time. The drumline is solid... they need to clean up some things, but they are a very confident line. they are playing lots of notes, have a badass groove section in there show, and the pit is very good. The horn line, well the whole corps or that matter, is very young. They are strong, but sometimes their lack of experience shows. If they can fix their timing problems, this corps will turn some heads this season in its first season.

Teal Sound 52.50

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Strong Brass section, but sloppy. The drumline is real good at times, but the tenors are weak and the bass drums are very dirty, which is distracting. The dude in the pit has more energy then anyone I have seen in a long time. Overall, the show, in my opinion is very boring, and sometimes the worst timing problems occurred when the corps was standing still in the closer. These guys have a come a long way since last year, and will be a lot better this season.

Spirit of Atlanta 53.55

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

This corps is very young. The drum major is absolutely the hottest drum major I have ever seen!! The corps should never have timing problems with her on the podium. This drumline is hot - the best Spirit line I have ever seen. (I never saw any of the 80's lines, so please don't flame me). The book is very hard, and they are eating it up!! The Tampa show wasn't as good as the Orlando show, but the line is awesome. The drum feature, with the bass drums in the pit, is really cool. The hornline is young, and it shows. They will come along though as the season progresses. I didn't really care for the show, it was boring and the kids didn't seem confident in it. The guard was pretty good, but I don't know much about color guard. I think that Spirit is heading in the right direction, and this show will definitely improve as the season goes on.

Crossmen 67.10

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

WOW what a show. I didn't expect this from these guys. The hornline wails - much louder than Spirit or Crown, and the drumline is hot. The top bass drummer is a bad ass!!! The guard is very good. I didn't think they should have beat Crown on Sunday (they didn't), but they deserved to beat them on Monday! What a show!

Carolina Crown 66.70

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

I have never liked this corps [before], but I [do] now after this show!!! What a performance, although Monday's wasn't as good as Sunday's. The hornline is ballsy, in your face. The drumline is clean, and plays some stuff. Very demanding dynamic contrasts, and I haven't seen a snare line play so many singles - clean and in your face - since the Tom Float Blue Devils lines. These guys might make top 5 or 6, depending on how tight the top groups are. The pit is awesome - the mallet players are phenomenal!! The corps marches their asses off. This show is definitely Crown's best.

The Cadets 78.75

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

This is show is awesome!!!... The drill is fast and all over the place... the hornline is playing a lot of notes, and it is scary how clean it is in June. The drumline is awesome!! 10 snares in your face, and they may keep all ten. The drum solo is the coolest thing I have seen in a long time. The guard is very strong, as usual, and the show is very entertaining. The ending is not a typical Cadet ending, but I am sure that it will change before finals. This corps can definitely take Blue Devils and Santa Clara Vanguard and The Cavaliers, and could win high drums for the first time since 94. I am really excited about how finals will shape up this year!!!

Tampa Bay Thunder 53.80

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

These guys were pretty good, they had some problems but its early expect to see them move from where they are when the drill gets done and they start cleaning.

Teal Sound 52.50

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

They get out a pretty good sound for as little of a corps as they are they, still dont have all there drill done but scores will get better when they do, drum line is strong in this corps.

Spirit of Atlanta 53.55

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

Spirit has some work ahead of them, the drill needs cleaned up a lot and the brass line needs to start playing, drum line is pretty good, and so is guard but some of the drill doesn't go along with the music so that will probably make it hard to get the drill how they need it. I think the brass played really timid tonight.

Crossmen 67.10

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

WOW!!! What a show, the fans will really like this show, musically the show is the most fun i have seen all night. They had their share of problems though also, brass needs to put more on all the hits and sops need to balance more, but when they get this cleaned up they are definitely going places, the brass line was jamming on caravan and some really nice solos were there all through the show. I am gonna see where these guys go because they are really good. I think scoring was a little low for these guys, but the judges do know more than me.

Carolina Crown 66.70

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

I heard they were playing Zorro so I expected a boring show, but they realy did perform the show tonight. The drumline is the strongest part of this corps, the scores will probably reflect that too. I cant wait to see the show again when the rest of the gaud work is finished.

The Cadets 78.75

 (?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard)

They have been working hard. This show is definitely a contender for the 1st spot. They had a really good show, its entertaining it was performed well, and the judges liked it. Just a few spots to clean up, but all sections of this corps are holding tier own, they are really performing. I like the part in the show when the trumpet players finger each others horns while playing. Just one thing about the Bb switch, it is more in tune but i think it loses some of the richness that the bugles give, maybe i am just used to the old ways. Awesome show I hope they keep it up.
