Tampa Bay Thunder | 51.30 |
(?? Brass/?? Percussion/?? Color Guard) |

I was excited to see the new corps from the Tampa Bay area. I marched with Suncoast Sound and have heard rumors of a new group for many years, so it was good to see what's going on. Overall, I think this corps will be pretty solid once they finish cleaning the drill and the guard work. I was very impressed by the drum line last night - they did a good job but overshadowed the weaker sections of the corps. I did not think the theme of their show was communicated very well visually - I'm usually not one for props but they might help. |

I fully respect any one who marches with a small corps, and with the right instructional staff and program choice, small numbers do not inhibit entertainment value (Marauders, General Butler Vagabonds, etc.). Unfortunately it does not appear that Scenic City has either. Without being too negative, this corps has a long way to go visually, musically, and creatively. I believe this was their first show, so hopefully things will go uphill from this point. |

The '91 SCV version of Miss Saigon is one of my favorite shows ever, and I recently saw the Broadway production, so I was excited to see how this group would interpret it. The show started off very strong, but went downhill. This was also their first show, so a lot of the drill and guard work were sloppy or not finished. I also feel that the musical arrangements tried to cover too much of the material from the musical. I would much rather hear 3 or 4 complete songs than snippets of 8 or 9. I also question the choice of guard equipment for the ballad. I believe they were using dowels with no flags, and they were visually lost from up in the stands. I look forward to see how they improve the show before Washington, DC. |

I will be honest and say that I have never really been a fan of Spirit - They always seem to be playing a new version of the same show, their drill is usually sloppy, their horns overblown, and their guard dirty. I was very surprised by the improvements they have made. The horn line played in control the entire show. Someone in the stands said that the people over Magic's horn lines were working with Spirit this season, and you can really tell. Also, I thought the percussion section was very solid and had an entertaining feature. The color guard did a good job within the drill, and should be able to clean things up and finish learning the show very soon. Overall, the best showing, especially this early, of Spirit in a while. |

I had the opportunity to watch the Crossmen rehearse during the afternoon, and was excited about the level of their show. Last year in June, they were marching holes and I doubted that they would even make top 12. I think that their show was the most complete of the night as far as drill and guard work. A couple of times tonight their feet were all over the place, but they held it together. The colorguard is once again outstanding and already very clean. As always, the percussion line is strong but did not stand out as much as in past years. Surprisingly, In the Mood translates pretty well to the field. The new arrangements of Caravan and Birdland also work very well, and the ballad is nice, too. I'm glad they decided against Ricky Martin for the closer. I was very surprised to see that Crown beat the Crossmen last night. |

I spent the last 2 years working in the Charlotte area, so part of my June ritual was watching Crown practice during everydays. Also, their Jekyll and Hyde show was one of my favorites last year - mainly because of the ballad and colorguard. I was excited to see that their horn line is much larger and stronger than previous years. I think they are finally coming up to the performance level of the drums and guard. I think that the guard will be very entertaining, but they had several exposed drops, especially in the sabre line. Their costumes and several poses are pretty risqué, but overall they communicate the Spanish feel of the music very well. I also thought that their drill was a lot more effective than in years past. Should place higher on finals night than they usually do - very solid, but I thought Crossmen had a better show. |
The Cadets | 78.80 |

I am always biased to the Cadets, and always think they do an outstanding job (except for the taxicabs), and I was not disappointed. They (obviously) had the strongest guard, drill, hornline, and percussion of the night. I don't know a thing about drums, but I did notice them marching 10 snares and did not think it added that much to the show. The Cadets and the Crossmen were the only groups last night that seemed to really enjoy performing their shows. I thought the music was very unique, and translated well to the field. The 'controversial' change to b flat instrumentation really did not change the overall enjoyment of the production. I am sure that they will place in the top 3, and it will be an interesting run for 1st - I am sure that they will, as usual, be contenders. |
Overall a good show despite the threat of rain. I did not stay for retreat, so I can't comment on the Mass Brass and Percussion. I think that clearer directions to the stadium and parking lots would have helped. Also, with all the land around JF Byrnes HS, I think warm up areas could have been chosen better so warm-ups would not interfere with the groups on the field. Nice job, everyone!
