Thanks to David Myers on r.a.m.d for this review!

Editorial notes:

The show was not adjudicated. Placements were determined by audience vote (don't ya just HATE that!).

Place...Corps
1......BD
2......XMen
3......Bluecoats
4......Tarheel Sun (the surprise of the evening)
5......Caro. Crown
6......Pioneer
7......Volunteers

Beautiful night for corps, mid 70s with light breeze and low humidity (for TN anyway). Attendance was announced as "over 4000".

Blue Devils continue to clean and perfect a show that will win at Orlando, unless the Cadets and/or SCV can pull off a miracle. The horn line can strip paint off concrete while maintaining intonation and musicality, while the drum line sounds like the hammers of hell (I mean that in a GOOD way, haha). Could this be the year that the top three are spaced only .1 apart?

Crossmen have gone to all black jackets for their 2nd tour, and the DMs are in nice silky, gauzey pantsuits. Their show is intense and they're really jacking up the level as Orlando draws near.

Bluecoats....I just love 'em... they really blew the house down tonight. M&M continues to be troublesome at times, as well as the guard work. Gonna be interesting to see where they end up this year. Go Bluuuuuuuuuuuuu!

Tarheel Sun did themselves proud tonight. Nice arrangements and unis; they need to punch up the dynamics a bit more (not just louder, mind you, but more contrast) to compete with the big boys.

Carolina Crown was the surprise placement of the night. I had them higher than 5th, but what do I know... RCM sounded just wonderful, ya can't help but get good feelings remembering how SCV worked this piece, and Crown does a great job with it.

Pioneer had great unis; reminded many in the audience of the old Scouts unis. Danny Boy sounded great, and they played to the stands as they trooped off after the show. Great show, shades of Riverdance???

The Volunteers continue to attack a demanding show. They've revised the opener for the 2nd tour. The brass book had the horns worn down about half way thru. Nice arrangements and M&M; those kids have lots of guts. I wonder what they'll do next year?

Editorial notes:

I see Mister Myers has beaten me to the punch, so I guess I'll just write up the SECOND review for this show.

In performance order:

Volunteers - They continue to attack a set of musical arrangements that are difficult even by Div. I standards. With the small number of horns, and the difficulty of the drill, one begins to wonder when they will begin to rewrite sections of their show for cleanliness' sake. Right now, it's genuinely difficult for the fans to appreciate.

Tarheel Sun - Showed they can PLAY Stan Kenton, and most folks in the stands were not prepared to hear this good a show from a Div.II corps. Their uniforms work very well with the late afternoon sun (no surprise), and though they were loud, they showed great control in the lower dynamic ranges. A little more contrast, and some work with the guard, will go a long way toward a shot a the Div. II title.

Pioneer - Decided that their Irish roots were the best way to go this year, to which one can only respond, "Erin go braugh!" They had the extra volume that Tarheel aspires to, and a lot of energy, but they lacked control at lower volumes and in exposed passages. Probably deserved to finish behind Sun, but it was close, and very enjoyable.

Carolina Crown - This corps continues to improve itself show by show. They finished behind Tarheel Sun primarily because their show arrangement does not project a lot of power to the audience. Their brass, drums, and guard all outperformed the previous corps, but "Russian," "Armenian," and "Jerusalem" (how's THAT for multi-cultural?) ought to have much more impact than they do right now. Deserved higher than fifth thanks to their talent, but they got out-punched in GE. Should finish in finals.

Bluecoats - When are they going to stop explaining that people are "BLUUUE-ing," not "BOOOO-ing?" The first corps after the break, the corps from Canton out-did Crown in just about every way except possibly performance percussion. Still some M&M gaffes here and there this late in the year, but the horns are sassy, and the guard is EVERYTHING Magic of Orlando's aspires to be. A little more low brass would be nice now and then, and some work here and there on staging and ensemble problems. Can they move up? We'll see.

Crossmen - This corps put on the most difficult show of the night, and pulled it off in spades. Second tonight in placement, and in all other categories, excepting pit and maybe guard, but still a step up from everyone else before. Still a couple weak spots here and there in the exposed sections (nearly the whole show) and in the musical ensemble, but those of you hollering for more GE just got it. Whatever their problems up to this point, they seem to have fought through most of them, and corps in front of them (Glassmen, Blue Knights, Madison) had better start looking over their shoulders.

Blue Devils - What do you get when you mix '85 & '90 Cadets, and '88 Phantom Regiment, and a dash of blue food coloring? Not a lot here that's really ground breaking, but when it's done this well, one really doesn't mind one bit. Even here, though, a little uncleanliness in the guard, some boo-boo's in the marching department, and a nameless soprano who hung a full-corps release. Again, when it's this good, it's easy to see the small stuff. Will they win? It's possible, but watch out for a hard-charging Santa Clara Vanguard.

That's how it happened. I was there.
