Review - July 17, 1998, Brantford, ONT, CN - ODCA

Editorial notes:

Brantford Ontario was the stage as St. John's Drum Corps featured 5 corps in 2 divisions of competition. The weather was perfect in which all corps gave the audience some moments to remember. On this night Drum Corps was alive and well in Ontario.

And now for the Review starting with division III.

4th PLACE----41.6---- FIRST DEFENDERS, PAULSBORO, NJ.
This smaller corps, ( 7 brass, 3 guard, and 3 percussion) had a weak beginning but shortly after they got things rolling with their selection of numerous pieces. The last half of the show was pretty much a standstill and all sections were very "dirty" for this point in the season. However, the kids looked like they were having a blast performing and that is what counts, keep up the great effort.

3rd PLACE----64.2----EMERALD KNIGHTS, MISSISSAUGA, ONT.
This year Emerald is marching a larger corps consisting of 17 brass, 8 guard and 12 percussion in a program based on the movie El Cid. Emeralds strong point today seemed to be their percussion with their weaknesses being their M&M show which had bad intervals that were very noticeable and members constantly out of step. I did enjoy the guard's performance and the variety of equipment that they used. The 3 young boys in the pit did an outstanding job and overall Emerald has put a nice package on the field, keep up the fine job.

2nd PLACE----67.8---- CONQUEROR II, HAMILTON, ONT.
Conqueror's talented corps of 14 brass, 14 percussion, and 8 guard performed music from Interview with the Vampire. The show opens with strong and powerful section which leads into a very entertaining show. The Pit is large and full of talent, as is the guard but the purple pieces of cloth just don't do anything for me and the candle holders at the front of the field are great but were are the candles?? This corps seems to get better every year, they should achieve a position in the upper half of division III in Orlando. Good Job!

1st PLACE----79.1---- ST. JOHN'S, BRANTFORD, ONT.
Usually I coin the term "big things come in small packages" at the Mandarins of California but this year I coin that term towards St.John's. With only 11 brass, 5 guard and 13 percussion the blew me away! All 11 horns were balances and produced volume and quality that you would expect from a 30 person horn line. The drum line's feature was very energetic and clean. The guard is 90% of the time together and uses dancing and equipment work to their full advantage. And from a visual standpoint I saw actual drill forms or pictures for the first time tonight. The kids seem to handle the midieval / heros themes very well, I guess that is why they are continuing on the hero theme from last year. I got the same feeling watching this corps tonight as I did watching the Blue Stars come up through the ranks in 1993. The DCI division III title in Orlando is certainly within their reach. Outstanding Job, two thumbs up!

Tonight we only saw one corps in division ll.

1st PLACE----58.3---- DUTCH BOY, KITCHENER-WATERLOO, ONT.
Dutch Boy is comprised of 23 percussion, 35 brass, and 19 guard and this young bunch of kids did a terrific job. Okay I heard people around me saying that they were very dirty and yes they were but they were very, very entertaining. If all of these kids stick with it Dutch Boy will definately have a corps to contend with in a few years. Super Job, Keep it up. I look forward to your entertaining show at the Canada Open.

The 3rd Regiment from Quebec was supposed to be here tonight competing in division III but for some reason or another they didn't make it. Hope everything is OK.

All in all a great night of music, marching and pagentry!
