NOTES:
I always re-enter the recaps into a spread sheet with formulas. I notice
a 1 point difference in Pioneer's number from the written/announced
score. The recap I have is an original carbon, so I will verify the
number tomorrow.

The Brass caption Judge is listed as 'Judge ill-Averaged score', yet I
can't figure out WHAT they averaged. Usually they average the other 2
performance numbers. But that math doesn't work. So I will also ask
about that tomorrow as well.

MN Brass, Inc. performed in exhibition. The judges made tapes but did
not issue a number. Always a good time playing before a sold out home
croud. Can;t wait till tomorrow.

Editorial notes:

By now, most of you have seen enough shows to provide a detailed, in-depth, analysis of each corps performance. So here are a few quick notes that would summarize some of the corps performances at this show:

PIONEER
The first noticeable thing about Pioneer is their new uniforms. Black tunic, green sleeves, khaki pants, and white spats! Kinda reminded me of 27 for some reason (personally, I liked the old uniforms better!).

Of course, Irish music is their mainstay and this year is no exception. Although this year's program is performed significantly better than last year's production, it isn't quite as entertaining.

COLTS
This year, the Colts are....well.....the Colts! Of course, this is both good and bad. Good in that their performance captions (brass and percussion) are solid, and bad in that they still suffer in the general effect and visual captions. The guard isn't as good as last year, and how I wish they would improve their marching design and technique (although the last drill move was nice)!!!

They will struggle to make Finals this year, and I doubt they will pull it off.

MAGIC OF ORLANDO
I'm sure you've heard it before, but Magic's horn line is especially tough for a corps in the bottom half of the Top 12. Lots of difficulty, including many horn runs, and a great soprano section.

Their drill is nice (lots of movement) but needs some cleaning, and their guard looks like a lot of fun.

The one big downside, and I mean big, is the percussion section. Specifically, the battery. I don't know what's going on there, but boy is it bad! They are very tough to hear clearly, everything seems muffled, muted, or muddy! I noticed that the snare line were not using projectors, but I don't know if that was in order to keep us from hearing bad drumming or not.

Nevertheless, I do believe that this show has enough to make it in to Finals.

CROSSMEN
The Crossmen bring a little old in with a little new.

The music is Pat Metheny (this is the "old"), and it is wonderful. The "new" is their drill. This is the most agressive drill design I have seen from the Crossmen. There is a lot of movement, and they do a good job of utilizing the entire field.

Unfortunately, the drill appears to be what is holding them back. Although they seem to be marching it fairly cleanly, it seems to be sapping their energy some. Specifically, their horn line performance appears to be suffering. On the positive side of things, as they get more comfortable with the drill, that performance and energy level should increase.

As for the guard and percussion.....the guard is still very good, but not as good as last year, and the percussion line is stronger than last year's bunch (although they were only marching five snares).

MADISON SCOUTS
The Scouts were the easy winners tonight. There isn't a whole lot to say here. The horn line is typical Scouts (with great soloists, duets, trios, etc...). The percussion line is typical Scouts (better than last year though). The guard is typical Scouts (except the uniforms....yuck!). And the drill design is typical Scouts.

For me, though, something was missing. Don't get me wrong, this is a great show. However, I didn't catch myself jumping out of the stands, screaming, like I usually do when I see Madison.

As a side note, the Drum Major's technique was excellent, and the pit looks like they are having a great time!

Overall, it was a good show, and the weather was absolutely perfect for a drum corps show (the members must have loved coming to Minnesota where they got some relief from the heat!). Unfortunately, this show took place at a junior-high school stadium, and the ticket prices were steep ($20 for the good seats, $5 for backfield seats).

Tomorrow, Phantom Regiment (and Bluecoats) comes to town so I'll get to see what's happening to them this year and tell you about it!!!
