Editorial notes:

This will be the first time in years I have missed DCA championships this weekend (curses on the move down to Allentown away from the original Rochester 2 year plan... I hate that almost as much as the Orlando monopoly), and I'm really wishing I could see this one... it was a fantastic night for drum corps at the new P&C Stadium, and what a show...

Chieftans (7th - 69.1) Well, the obvious comment is what a stylistic change from 60s rock. Frankly, and this is an opinion my girlfriend will kill me for, the change was necessary for them to grow. The rock 'n' roll gimmick kept the crowds happy for a couple of years, but to pump up some membership and expand, they need to think about numbers now, too. With traditional uniforms and some more mainstreamly corpsesque music, they're on their way. Having said that, though, who picked those tunes?!? If I had to tack a title on their show, it would've had to be "Non-Sequitur." I do feel they were technically improved from last year, though, and as long as they find someone who can design a show a little better, they'll keep surviving. My finals prediction: haven't a clue, due to new second class (sorry).

Grenadiers (6th - 76.4) Now that's more like it... some really exciting stuff from the Grenadiers. Well composed show. Sloppy but energetic delivery, and a million times better than any other year I have seen them perform. If they can build from this next season like they did this time, they could crack a solid finals spot. It could happen this year with a really hot show, but both Sky and Hurcs would have to have a really bad day. Overall, though, I loved the show. Just plain exciting, even if it did need cleaning.

Buccaneers (5th - 82.2) I've never been a Buccaneers fan, but this was the only place I disagreed with tonight (I had them in 4th). Some really nice things are happening in this show, including an awfully nice visual package and some exciting firebird sequences in the end. Look for them anywhere between 7th and 9th in finals.

Crusaders (4th - 82.9) The 50th anniversary edition of the Cru is their best in years, with (finally) a good sized hornline, with a sound to match. I like the show composition (though I find the pictures backfield a little lame), and saw some very nice drill this year. The God Bless the Child section has really come together to form a nice package since I saw them in Rochester. Expect yet another 8th place, but don't be too shocked if they climb a spot (pending competitors' performances as well, of course).

Bushwackers (3rd - 88.3) I know I'm going to miss the theatric style if they stay to the jazz theme in the future, but I can't say the change didn't produce a hot latin show with the best of 'em... I LOVE the opening sequence... hornline was hot... but what happened to the drumline? It may be just me, but they seemed kind of small. Don't get me wrong, though, a very technically proficient drumline it was. A little too far back for a longshot at the title, but 3rd place is not out of reach... hell, I think they've got the momentum to lock it in by a few points, too.

Syracuse Brigadiers (2nd - 93,1) WOW! Absolutely the best I've ever seen from them. Brilliantly flowing show travelled like a continuous line from beginning to end, and kept the crowd on the edge of their seats every second; very reminiscent of last year's hot Westshoremen (only a slightly spotty ending to smooth over). Two big plusses: A one hundred percent on fire hornline, with some scorching solos and a beautiful balance, and a colorguard that is to be reckoned with... I totally agreed with the caption awards tonight... Brigs had it all over everyone in brass and guard. I'd even have had them in pretty close in visual and GE, too. Definitely a shot for the title, with only one obstacle between them and that trophy, the frustratingly persistently awesome...

Empire Statesmen (1st - 93.8) The judges had this one right on. They were fantastic, and did have just a tiny edge on Brigadiers, total package. Brigs ALMOST have their show feeling like it's a singular offering, but Empire has tied their package up with a big red ribbon and mailed it. Now, don't get me wrong, I still think the helicopter is cheesy, but take away their props, and they still out-theatered many of the best broadway corps shows I've seen. I still wish thy didn't end just a touch before my favorite part (of their echo from SCV '91), but the ending feels like an ending with closure now (it didn't quite draw your attention to the right spots a month ago, but it really has found expression now). A great hornline, well balanced, and could do battle with the best of them in DCI. The real stars, though, are still Empire's beastial drumline, daring anyone to find a flaw... I'd hazard to say the only lock I feel there is in finals is Empire's lock on the percussion caption. They need to look behind them on the other accounts, though, as the Brigs are sneaking up behind slowly but surely. Stay one beat ahead, and the title is theirs. Let up, even for a millisecond, and the Brigs could dart past.

Man, I wish I could see finals this season. :-) Good luck to all... I have no doubt it will be one unruly rumble.
