Editorial notes:

This was a great show. Every corps got a standing ovation and deserved it. The show started with the 3 division II corps followed by the 6 division I corps.

Madison Scouts won division I with a score of 82.9, winning both GE captions, ensemble music, and performance visual. I have to say that I agree with all of these. Madison's Pirates of Lake Mendota was clearly the most exciting show of the night with the crowd jumping to its feet at the end. Their marching was excellent and the judges agreed. I thought that Madison was more exciting in years past but this show has more content to it.

Phantom Regiment came in second with a score of 82.2, winning ensemble visual, and performance brass and percussion. Again I agreed with the judges (and this is rare for me). Phantom's horn line had the most beautiful sound of the night with some of the tightest intonation that I have ever heard. Wagner's "The Ring" is a great show but similar to Madison does not generate the excitement of years past (however give them a few more weeks!). This was the first time that I have seen Phantom this year and I was expecting more. The marching show needs some cleaning, and I thought the color guard looked too simple for my tastes and expectations for Phantom. The guard is in black and does relatively little equipment work. Despite this opinion of mine, they won the auxiliary caption. Overall, I was hoping for more since I was anticipating Phantom winning DCI this year. I haven't given up yet. I'll still keep cheering.

Cavaliers came in third with a score of 80.5 (0.3 penalties). This show is a great package and as usual the drum line is awesome. The Firebird is one of the best shows that the Cavies have done. Usually I don't like the choice of music that the Cavies do but I really like this show. The show started out with a silent drill that was much more effective than early season simply because it is clean. The horn show is very difficult and well executed. The visual show is slop!! The Cavies have a long way to go to clean this very difficult show. If the Cavies get this show clean, don't count them out. This is one of their better shows over the years. I agree with the 3rd place finish tonight but I still think that this show could take them to the top.

Glassmen are back. Pencil them in for DCI finals in Orlando. The music of Bizet is great and put them in 4th with a score of 76.3. I still don't know how the ladders fit in to the theme, but it is done well. They were only a tenth behind Cavies in visual performance (I mean this as a complement to Glassmen). Visually they have a very clean look and the horn line sounds great.

The Colts have a great hornline this year. They were in 5th with a score of 72.0. They are loud and sound like a good old fashioned horn line! The music of Blood Sweat and Tears works well. The opener seems to lack a definable melody but the show improves as it goes on. Overall, I thought that the show was a bit on the simplistic side, and this may be what is hurting their score. They hit the field with 60 horns that part your hair. The visual show could use more flash. I really didn't pay much attention to the guard until the end of the show. This great hornline needs to take a few more liberties with the music and add some "umfffe." staff doesn't wait too long.

The Pioneer came in 6th with a score of 64.6. This is the first year that Pioneer have marched in Division I. They won Division II for the last 4 years in a row. River Dance is a very difficult book to pull off. The musical book is far more impressive than the visual book. The visual show is disappointing since its only natural to compare it to the stage show. The music show is excellent. This is not easy music to play. I don't think that most of the crowd realizes how much content is in this music. This show has grown since I first saw it. Great show!

The Blue Stars won Division II with a score of 56.1. Their 25 horns have a very classy sound. They sound at times like a miniature Phantom and at other times like Star. Very impressive, very clean and they march very well. They won every caption except ensemble music. They had some balance problems at times with the lower sopranos playing over the ensemble. This very impressive corps received a well deserved standing ovation at the end. Congratulations Blue Stars for a very impressive show.

The Americanos scored a 51.5 (0.1 penalty) to take second place. This was clearly the most exciting Division II corps. Their music of Gloria Estefan had a nice colorful start with high energy. It was clean and the guard was exciting. The guard took a lot of risks with their equipment and I counted only one drop the whole show. The keyboard section is awesome. Great job (too bad that only one division II corps goes on to finals).

The Capital Sound scored a 46.8 for 3rd place. Their show "Excellent Elington" is a real nice show. They have a strong hornline and great soloists. The marching is good with a lot of neat effects. I really enjoyed this show but something is missing with the horn line. The sound is choppy. Maybe a more legato approach with more liberties with the rhythms might make this hornline sound louder and flow better. There clearly is a lot of talent and effort out on the field.

Overall, there was not one corps with a boring show tonight. Everyone was good. On the other side of the coin, this was not one of the best years for DCM. Everyone had a good show, but no one left me breathless like '95 Madison or '93 Phantom. I'll post my review of Finals later (don't be surprised if my opinions change overnight).
