6/15/97 - Sunday - Metamora, Illinois

The show originally scheduled for Normal Illinois was canceled and replaced by the show in Metamora. The corps were there but the judges were not. The show went on as an exhibition. Even though there were no scores, I'll list the corps in order of how I would have predicted them to place.

Madison Scouts had a very powerful and fun show. The horn line was hot as expected. Madison had the cleanest performance of the night but had the usual early season problems. The pirate theme should develop to be one of the more enjoyable shows come August. Keeping in mind that this is the first and only time that I have seen any of the corps this year, Madison's show didn't excite me as much as their last years show did. I say this cautiously since the last time I saw Madison was in Finals last year.

Cavaliers would have been a close second, as in within tenths. Cavies are doing the Firebird this year. The opening minutes of the show are strange!!! This may take a few viewings before I can enjoy it. They start the show in silence with no equipment and do an artsy-fartsy acting job to start the show before picking up their horns. I wasnât real sure what they were doing. I also thought that it looked rather sloppy. Once the show really started, there was a lot of dropped equipment that was very distracting. After a couple of minutes into the show, my opinions started changing rapidly. The middle and end of the show was solid and very very intense. I was very impressed with both the horn and drum line.
The difficulty and content of this show will make the Cavies very dangerous once they clean up the show. I think this will be strong year for the Cavies. This show is a much better book than they had last year and I enjoyed it much more than last years show.

The Blue Star blew my socks off. I was not expect them to be this good. They have a very difficult musical book that was very well executed. This could very well be a div II champion in the making. I'm looking forward to this being a very good year for the Blue Stars.

Capital Sound had a nice sounding horn line with great soloists. I enjoyed the show as did the audience.

Americanos had a very difficult Latin show doing Gloria Estefan music. They were having a bit of a hard time executing this very challenging music. They have some work ahead of them, however, I left the show humming their music.

Phantom Regiment Cadets were very good. They had the richest sound of any of the div. II/III corps. Obviously a very talented instructional staff teaching the importance of blend and intonation.

Mirage from Central Illinois are a small corps but they played with heart. Their show was a jazz theme. I was impressed with the versatility of the contrabass players who doubled as key board players. The maturity of the sound and the intonation still have a way to go. I also thought that the difficulty of the music was a bit too challenging for a corps this young.

Keep in mind that it is the first season of the year and I am not one of the judges. These are only my impressions based on my personal tastes. Overall, I was very impressed by all the corps performances. All of the kids did a great job.
